Attitude, baby!

Another quick moment to give us clarity on one thought. Look at your feelings towards your work. How this attitude can affect our practice, should be analyzed regularly.

00:00:35 Tim [ONLY TIM SPEAKS IN THIS EPISODE]

And now InterpreTips, 10 minutes or less.

00:00:40

Speaking less, meaning more.

00:00:43

Today, let's talk about the tip of loving your work.

00:00:50

Love is such an abstract idea.

00:00:53

So many different variations of and what it means in different contexts and perspectives.

00:01:02

But today, let's talk about doing the work you love, meaning you should love what you do, especially when you're working with people.

00:01:13

Sometimes we have that love-hate relationship, and that's okay.

00:01:18

Because loving your work doesn't mean it's always peaches and cream, roses and dandelions, rainbows and unicorns.

00:01:29

I said I was going to speak less, didn't I?

00:01:31

I'm not working really well today.

00:01:33

Okay, so when you love your work, you just do it better.

00:01:38

You want it to be the best that it can be.

00:01:42

You get annoyed when there's mistakes.

00:01:44

You get annoyed when something blocks you from doing a good job, when there's barriers put up, when there's boundaries that intimidate or block what you intended because you thought this was the best way, which is why you get annoyed or upset or frustrated.

00:02:06

It's because you love the work.

00:02:09

You want it to be good.

00:02:11

So, while those feelings of frustration or annoyance feel bad or negative, it's actually a sign that you love what you do and you want it to be good.

00:02:24

You're trying your best.

00:02:26

It's when that annoyance and that frustration is constantly there, and you see no way around it, that's when the burnout feeling comes to you because you don't know a way out.

00:02:41

You don't know a constructive way to fix this, to go back to the work you love.

00:02:48

I would ask that we reframe that in saying, I want the work I love to have less frustrations.

00:02:58

That's where we should analyze those things that annoy us, things that frustrate us, things that are giving a barrier to what we intended.

00:03:08

Maybe we have done something wrong in our process, whether it's the interpretation, whether it's how we entered a situation professionally as a business-minded person.

00:03:22

Maybe we introduced ourselves wrong.

00:03:25

Maybe we set up our working conditions, the expectations incorrectly.

00:03:32

Did we inform the agency that we're working for that we wanted this, this, this?

00:03:38

Did we tell the clients, this is what I can do, and this is what I cannot do?

00:03:44

Do I need to develop my language fluency more?

00:03:49

Did I prepare myself as much as possible for this situation?

00:03:54

Did I ask for the materials for this conference or this workshop or for any of these situations?

00:04:02

Did I ask in the proper way that gave me the most amount of materials to prepare for it as I could?

00:04:11

Analyzing all of those frustrations and things that annoy us help us better reduce them in the future.

00:04:20

And that allows us to feel the love that we have for our work.

00:04:26

If you find that you do not enjoy the work when there are minimal to no frustrations or annoying habits or things that occur, if you're not enjoying it, maybe you need to rethink if you love the work.

00:04:43

We should all revisit why we got into this profession.

00:04:48

I would say once a year and the beginning of a new year is always a good time to restart that feeling for our work, our practice.

00:04:59

Our practice means our work is constantly being practiced.

00:05:04

We constantly analyze and ask us questions.

00:05:08

Why do I believe it this way?

00:05:09

Why do I want to do this when this happens?

00:05:15

Am I in a habit, or am I in a structured process that helps me develop and improve?

00:05:23

Do I still love my work?

00:05:25

Do I love this practice of interpreting?

00:05:29

Remembering that love doesn't necessarily have to go both ways.

00:05:35

We can love our work, and interacting with the clients and the communities that we serve.

00:05:41

We can love the languages, the mental process, all of those aspects we can love, but it doesn't necessarily mean that those clients are going to love us back.

00:05:52

Not always.

00:05:54

Hopefully the interactions are varied enough that we get that love back for the practice that we do, because that's when it's a full circle.

00:06:07

We love what we're doing, we enjoy, being around those people who also enjoy being around us.

00:06:15

Love what you do and do what you love.

00:06:19

You gotta love it.

00:06:21

Keep up the practice.

00:06:23

Until next time, keep calm.

00:06:26

Interpret the love.

00:06:28

I'll see you next week.

00:06:29

Take care now.
